Norton Firewall Security

January 20, 2008

This is NOT Personal, Political, Pointed or Provocative, but it certainly IS HELPFUL. Friends have asked me to post these for easy reference.  Let us know what you think – comment below.

If you’re running Norton InterNet Security with Vista, it’s important to remember that file sharing security is handled through your Firewall.

Here are instructions for Norton InterNet Security, it took me a while to find them in the Norton documentation. Blocking Windows File Sharing is especially important if you use WIFI!!!

Norton Internet Security => Settings => Select Norton Internet Security Options at bottom of the page

Select Personal Fire Wall => Advanced – review list to ensure there are no dangerous permissions

See this Norton Description of Options: Note ORDER OF OPTIONS IS IMPORTANT!

BLOCK Windows File SharingPrevents other computers from accessing shared files that are on this computer. Also prevents other computers from using shared printers that are attached to this computer.

When this rule is moved up in rules list so that it is applied before other rules regarding file and print sharing, this rule provides an easy method to turn file and print sharing on or off.

ICPM In/Out – Leave Enabled – Allows Pings to be sent and received

DNS In/Out – Leave Enabled – Removing this rule causes DNS to fail. To increase security without removing the rule, change the rule to allow the computer to send DNS queries only to the user’s primary DNS server.

In NetBIOS NameDISABLE – Prevents NetBIOS requests from finding the name of the local computer. NetBIOS cannot find the computer name by sending a query to the local computer.

Bootp – Leave Enabled – allows for static IP addresses.

Outbound NetbiosLeave Enabled – allows you to view shared files on other computers.

Inbound NetBiosDISABLE – prevents other computers from accessing your files.

Microsoft SMB – BLOCK – SMB is a Microsoft Windows feature that can be used to provide an alternate method for file and print sharing. This rule prevents SMB from being used to permit file and print sharing.

Loopback In/OutLeave Enabled – allows the computer to send messages to itself.

EMAP Block – ENABLE BLOCK – EPMAP is a protocol that can be used by one computer to change the configuration of the services that are running at another computer. This rule prevents EPMAP from modifying the services that are at the local computer.

UpnP – Leave Enabled – Universal Plug and Play

SSDPLeave Enabled – Simple Service Discovery Protocol – discovers plug and play

LLMNR – Leave Enabled – Local Link Multicast Name Resolution

Reset the Firewall and make these changes. Check your system often to see if hackers have altered them or if unauthorized changes have been made!

BLOCK LIST: Order is important, move up the most important

Devotion Dedication Determination

January 15, 2008

Emperor PenguinsThe Emperor Penguins featured in The March of the Penguins movie inspired the world with incredible images of devotion, dedication and determination to survive and overcome amazing difficulties.

Most of us had no understanding or appreciation for their strength, their determination, the rigor of their lives or their elegant beauty before we saw the movie.

Perhaps it will prompt us to see and appreciate instances of incredible devotion, dedication and determination close to us that we have overlooked.

Unlike the cheeful characters in Disney’s Happy Feet, the Emperor Penguins have no other alternatives.  They can’t simply decide to do things differently or take take off for warmer climates.

It’s also a chilling reminder of the cold, desolate bleakness of a world without options, that is dictated and controlled by forces beyond our control offering no freedom, flexibility, creativity, compromise or appealing alternatives.

Embrace their elegant beauty, delight in their devotion, admire their determination and dedication.

Celebrate, appreciate and guard our freedoms to choose, to change and to create without constricting dictatorial restraints. Be grateful we can have Happy Feet ourselves!

Chicken Vegetable Soup Supreme

December 5, 2007

Pressure cook 4 – 5 lb chicken ( or equivalent) 45 minutes to 1:15 hours (if frozen) covered with water seasoned with:
garlic (powder works fine)
fresh rosemary (four – six sprigs from your neighbor’s mailbox )
2 large carrots cut up
black pepper corns (or red pepper flakes) and some cloves

if the chicken is NOT frozen 45 minutes – 1 hour should do it. Chicken legs & thighs fine.

Cool – strain broth – clarify the broth with three egg whites & shells per the standard chicken bouillion clarifying procedures. Strain through a handy wipe or a large strainer while the broth is warm to keep the fat from mucking up the filter. No need to do final straining – the vegetables and chicken cloud the broth.

Separate chicken from the bone, discard the vegetables, bones and skin.

Put chicken broth in a very large pot (mine is 300 oz) bring to a boil and add:
6 large carrots cut up in bite sizes (1-2 lbs)
1 12-13 oz. box of whole wheat spiral pasta
1 large onion sliced

boil until the past just begins to cook and the carrots are slightly tender.  The soup continues cooking after you turn off the heat.

Turn off the heat and add:

6 large stalks of celery cut up in bite sizes ( a half to a full large stalk bunch)
chicken cut up into bite size pieces*Incredible Chicken Soup

season with:
dried crushed red (hot) peppers
garlic powder
salt
add water so the chicken broth is not too strong – fill it up to 300 oz
(I add about at least two quarts, sometimes a gallon)

* You may have chicken left over to munch on! It does NOT take all the chicken unless you want a really chickeny soup.

Cook ONLY long enough for pasta to begin to cook (8-10 minutes). The soup continues to cook after you turn off the stove. Onions, carrots and celery will be fresh, bright colored. Or you can bring it to a boil, turn off the heat and then add additional water to stop the cooking to keep the vegetables fresh and green.

DO NOT OVER COOK!

Cool and freeze – Yields ten 25 oz servings (Glad Wrap containers) plus another small pot.

Shopping List:
(
I like my chicken soup heavy with meat and vegetables so I add to these amounts)
Chicken – (4-5 lbs.) legs & thighs work fine
Celery – 1 large bunch
Carrots – a 5 lb bag from Sam’s is fine for 2 batches with plenty left over
Onion – 1 – 2 large
Eggs – ½ dozen
Box 12 – 13 oz. whole wheat spiral pasta – Heartland from Kroger is GREAT!

Granulated garlic, fresh rosemary sprigs (from someone’s mail box), cloves, salt,
dried crushed red (hot) peppers (like what’s on the table at some pizza places)

It’s incredibly delicious and freezes well!!!!

Miracle in Malawi

December 2, 2007

Malawi mapIgnoring the Experts, a New York Times story this morning, describes the incredible turn around in food production by this small, impoverished African nation from disregarding the demands of the United States government…

“Over the past 20 years, the World Bank and some rich nations Malawi depends on for aid have periodically pressed this small, landlocked country to adhere to free market policies and cut back or eliminate fertilizer subsidies, even as the United States and Europe extensively subsidized their own farmers. But after the 2005 harvest, the worst in a decade, Bingu wa Mutharika, Malawi’s newly elected president, decided to follow what the West practiced, not what it preached.”

“Stung by the humiliation of pleading for charity, he led the way to reinstating and deepening fertilizer subsidies despite a skeptical reception from the United States and Britain. Malawi’s soil, like that across sub-Saharan Africa, is gravely depleted, and many, if not most, of its farmers are too poor to afford fertilizer at market prices.”

“As long as I’m president, I don’t want to be going to other capitals begging for food,” Mr. Mutharika declared. Patrick Kabambe, the senior civil servant in the Agriculture Ministry, said the president told his advisers, “Our people are poor because they lack the resources to use the soil and the water we have.”

What did they do?

“Last year, roughly half the country’s farming families received coupons that entitled them to buy two 110-pound bags of fertilizer, enough to nourish an acre of land, for around $15 — about a third the market price. The government also gave them coupons for enough seed to plant less than half an acre.”

What was the effect?

“Here in Malawi, deep fertilizer subsidies and lesser ones for seed, abetted by good rains, helped farmers produce record-breaking corn harvests in 2006 and 2007, according to government crop estimates. Corn production leapt to 2.7 million metric tons in 2006 and 3.4 million in 2007 from 1.2 million in 2005, the government reported.”

“The rest of the world is fed because of the use of good seed and inorganic fertilizer, full stop,” said Stephen Carr, who has lived in Malawi since 1989, when he retired as the World Bank’s principal agriculturalist in sub-Saharan Africa. “This technology has not been used in most of Africa. The only way you can help farmers gain access to it is to give it away free or subsidize it heavily.”

Why would the U.S. government want to strangle food production in impoverished African nations?  Doesn’t this create opportunities for our world economic competitors to win friends in the region and further alienate the world from the U.S.?  Is there any wonder why the world dislikes and distrusts us?

People starved to death in Malawi during the year of poor harvests.

About Happie1

November 23, 2007

Michele’s Full MoonThere was a full moon the night I turned 50. On that cold November evening I knew my life would never be the same. I was totally focused and determined to bring the Happiness Habit® message to the world. What an opportunity!

An old friend had begun studies and interviews of habitually happy people with the intent of modeling their behaviors and sharing key skills that lead to happiness and spiritual success. He gave it to me, he trusted me to guard the ideas and finish it well.

Our goal was to find universal, eternal principles that lead to happiness and spiritual success and convey them with  simple, clear, Coaching Credos™ that would be easy to remember and apply.

The Happiness Habit has been my life and mission for the past eight years. There have been lots of interesting, unexpected challenges and detours along the way.

Story telling skills I developed to prepare for performing served as the basis for StorySkills™. I patented Magnetic Voice™ to show people how to sound and feel great in unusual or stressful circumstances.

The Happiness Habit evolved gradually over time. There wasn’t a clear model to base it on, it grew in its own way and at its own pace.

We chose a consumer product testing and design approach with the belief that if our Happiness Habits were:
1) Consistent with established scientific research;
2) Consistent with what people generally knew and believed to be true; and most importantly,
3) If our Happiness Habits acutually helped people live happier more spiritually successful lives
then the validity of our approach would be validated.

How To Live A Happy Life – 101 Ways To Be Happier was finally published in November 2006. It shares only a small subset of the entire work which continues to expand.

I’m thrilled with the success of the Happiness Blog – HappinessBlog.com and with our Happy Life TV program. We’ll develop Happiness and Faith further in the future and release a revised addition of How To Live A Happy Life very soon. We’ve acquired an amazing new set of skills, strengths, goals and competencies along the way.

A full moon marked my birthday again this November, reminding me of all the ground I’ve covered since that cold November night eight years ago when I became certain the direction my life would take. There have been many triumphs and trials along the way.

Sadly, we’ve been targeted for sick, psychotic stalking that’s involved sabotaged business equipment, stolen files, slashed tee shirts, thefts, threats, home and office invasions, communications disruptions and the poisioning of business and personal relationships.

Someone is clearly trying to stop or slow our entry to market, perhaps to steal our concepts for themselves.

Who would be theatened by our Happiness Habit message that virtue and goodness is the basis for happiness?

Competitors who make money from people’s misery?  Managers who manipulate and control? Groups that use happiness for selfish, evil or dishonest purposes? They know I won’t cooperate.

We teach emotional independence, that revolt and rebellion are important to happiness and spiritual success. You don’t hand control of your thoughts, actions or feelings over to people who want to hurt, harm or harass you.

Family Fraud – my mother died in February, there was fraud in her estate. If I succeed and prosper, the validity of my position will be public and clear.

Retaliation for Revealing the Truth  in a confidential letter I wrote to the Securities and Exchange Commission describing major accounting lapses that allowed thefts to be concealed?

An Organized Crime Ring that wants to use my businesses as a cover for criminal activities?

A Combination of the Above?

But Happiness Prevails! The fire, the thefts, threats, sabotage and deliberate disruptions have all proven the power of our Happines Habit insights and message.  Happiness Habit® Coaching Credos™ work even under the most difficult situations and circumstances.  Happiness and spiritual success can be sustained and maintained no matter what happens to you.

A key is to Turn Bad Breaks Into Blessings, and indeed in many cases this has happened. Many of the evil deeds have brought unintended and unexpected blessings. I am certainly a great deal stronger, smarter and more wary than when I began.

I’ll tell the story as it evolves. Things I want to share but don’t fit elsewere will appear on Happie1.com – it will be an interesting, diverse series of postings. I look forward to your comments.
